The Singing Anchors has rapidly grown in one of the Capital Region’s most popular musical groups. Finding their creative home at Washington County’s Fort Salem Theater, the group – Jessica Layton, Jerry Gretzinger, and Benita Zahn – has originated a variety of shows with Fort Salem’s artistic director, Jay Kerr, and toured them extensively, including shows at WAMC’s Linda Auditorium in Albany, broadcast on WAMC, Saratoga’s First Night Celebration, annual Christmas shows at Vapor in the Racino at Saratoga Raceway, and countless benefits throughout the area. Over the last few summer seasons, the anchors have awed audiences on Salem’s Mainstage with an all-new salutes to music from Hollywood films, The Singing Anchors Go Hollywood, and The Singing Anchors on Broadway, each being reprised in their local bookings.
Benita Zahn, anchor and health reporter for NewsChannel 13, performed in the first season of Fort Salem’s cabaret in the summer of 2007, and has graced one or both of the Fort’s stages every season since. In the fall of 2009, she brought along Channel 13 colleague, Jessica Layton, and their CBS6 friend, Jerry Gretzinger. Their Fort Salem Theater presents The Singing Anchors has not only consistently filled the cabaret and Mainstage in Salem, but venues throughout the Capital Region.
The Fort’s Artistic Director, Jay Kerr, who writes and arranges the Anchors’ shows, recently praised the performers: “The only thing that’s difficult with working with these three media personalities is finding time they’re all available to rehearse. They thoroughly enjoy being with one another, appreciate one another’s talents, and always deliver top-notch performances. They have a good time, and so do their audiences.”
